Podiatry
Podiatry refers to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the hoof and distal limb. In the equine world this requires specialized knowledge and skills deriving from both veterinary medicine and farriery. We provide diagnostic and lameness evaluation services to help narrow down the cause of lameness in your equine friend along with shoeing services to work towards correcting or managing these problems.

A Comprehensive Approach to Laminitis

Dr. Busby has a strong professional focus and longstanding interest in laminitis, one of the most complex and challenging conditions affecting the equine foot. Through years of advanced education and hands-on experience, she has pursued extensive additional training with some of the leading laminitis specialists in the country. This focused training has allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the mechanical, metabolic, and inflammatory factors involved in laminitic disease and recovery.

By combining veterinary medicine, detailed hoof biomechanics, and integrative therapies, Dr. Busby approaches laminitis cases with a comprehensive, individualized mindset. Each horse is evaluated not only for the current stage of disease, but also for contributing factors such as limb loading, metabolic disorders, and overall health. This allows for thoughtful, adaptable treatment plans that evolve with the horse’s progress.

Dr. Busby is especially passionate about early recognition, owner education, and long-term management strategies for horses at risk for laminitis. Whether supporting an acute case, managing chronic laminitic changes,or working proactively with at-risk horses, her goal is to improve comfort, preserve function, and support quality of life through informed, collaborative care.

Collaborative Podiatry Care: The Vet–Farrier Partnership

Successful equine podiatry depends on a strong, collaborative relationship between the veterinarian, farrier, and horse owner. Dr. Busby firmly believes that the best outcomes occur when veterinary medicine and farriery work together as a unified team, each bringing essential expertise to the table. Clear communication, shared goals, and mutual respect are critical when managing complex hoof and lameness cases.

Supporting farriers is a core part of Dr. Busby’s practice philosophy. She is committed to helping farriers succeed by providing timely, high-quality diagnostic support that directly informs trimming and shoeing decisions. To encourage proactive, team-based care, special pricing is offered for hoof radiographs requested by the farrier as part of an active podiatry case. This allows farriers and owners to access critical information more readily, leading to better-informed hoof care decisions and improved outcomes for the horse.

Dr. Busby welcomes collaboration and values open dialogue with farriers, whether managing routine podiatry cases or complex conditions such as laminitis. By working together, the care team can create practical, realistic plans that prioritize the horse’s comfort, soundness, and long-term success.
